The McLean Contemporary is located on a typical McLean lot, but is anything but typical. A low brick front softens the mass of the home’s twelve-foot-tall first floor ceilings, and provides support for an elevated front terrace with views to the west. A glazed stair tower anchors the home, and adds drama to the everyday. Subtle brickwork brings a level of sophistication to the minimal exterior material palette, and clean lines within reflect the contemporary exterior. Expansive windows open to the rear yard and trees beyond, with sightlines from the interior emphasized by the home’s strong linear organization of rooms.

Deep portals and extended thresholds frame these views across the depth of the home, while creating a sequence of spaces each distinct from the next. Similarly, the second floor loft and breakfast nook off the kitchen divert from grand scale characteristic elsewhere in the home – each offering a uniquely intimate setting to retreat or entertain. A direct connection to the outdoors also enhances these rooms, with the elevated front terrace and backyard patio both accessible through sleek glass doors.

Light and Shadow

Architecture is all about the interplay of light and shadow; texture and temperature; more about the way a space makes you feel than a collection of its parts. It’s experienced not just in 3 dimensions but as a function of time. As your senses collect the information around you, time passes, and new experiences are formed. Take for example the way the sun fills a space…how the light transforms its surfaces…then watch, as the earth rotates and the sun’s angle changes; the light now reinventing the space. You see…life and time unfold in a space. Memories are formed, moments are framed…marked by the space they’re experienced in and etched in your mind for eternity.

This aspect of architecture enriches the human experience. Every new space you enter expands your perceptive qualities; cognitively and emotionally. It’s this richness, in each person as a child-like discoverer, that propels us to search for depth and richness in all we encounter.

Discover

We do not create the work. I believe we, in fact, are discoverers.
